Thomas Drops 27 in Historic Victory for Cardinals
In their most dominant performance of the season, CCBC Catonsville's women's basketball team won by 40 points over Northern Virginia Community College, taking an 87-47 victory.
Three Cardinal players scored in double digits, while freshman guard Ah'na Thomas (Bowie) put up a career-high 27 points in a flawless evening for Catonsville.
Despite the final score, the first quarter was close as Catonsville led 14-12 with a minute to go. It was the closest the Nighthawks would get, as a major three-pointer by freshman forward Kayla Cabbagestalk (Chesapeake) put the Cardinals ahead for good.
Leading 19-12 entering the second quarter, the Cardinals began to open the game up with consecutive buckets from Thomas and freshman forward Alfreda Potter (Carroll Christian). Capitalizing on the Nighthawks getting into foul trouble, the Cardinals pushed the lead to 40-28 at the half, with Cabbagestalk adding a last-second jumper before the buzzer.
The second half saw Catonsville's opportunistic defense clamp down on NOVA, holding the Nighthawks to just 19 points across two quarters. The offense continued to click, with freshman center Mylan Marable (Palumbo) scoring six points off the bench. The fourth quarter saw every single Cardinal score, with Thomas dropping ten more points to finish a historic night. Of the eight Cardinals who suited up for Wednesday's contest, six finished with season high's in points. Five of those players scored career highs as well.
Thomas finished the evening with an astounding 27 points, six rebounds, and seven steals. Cabbagestalk scored a double-double, adding 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Amaree McKnight (National Christian Academy) added 17 points herself, while Potter added 13 rebounds. Marable and freshman center Jocelyn Fogle (Hammon) both scored career highs in points with nine and seven respectively, while freshman forward Jaymes Kirby-Jackson (Overlea) scored a career-high six rebounds.
Next up for the Cardinals will be a showdown with Jamestown Community College on December 3.
