Region 20 Softball Championship Preview

Region 20 Softball Championship Preview

These four teams are all capable of bringing home the Region 20 championship as they have played close contests throughout the year, and the 2-5 seeds were all within one game of each other. CCBC would split with both Cecil and Southern Maryland but would drop both contests to the one seed Catamounts early in the season. The Cardinals over the past two weeks have been battling with the Howard Dragons who were another team that had the ability to take home the Region 20 title. These series have pushed the Cardinals to play their best softball of the season against high quality opponents. The Cardinals would also split a series with Cuyahoga Community College who finished their season 30-6 and are the favorites to advance in their region. The other three teams in the tournament would win their first-round matchups in just two games over inferior opponents, so the Cardinals will look to use these last two weeks to their advantage. CCBC offensively has proven to be deep with 8 players hitting over .300 avg, as well as quality bench options at their disposal to match up on the basepaths, defensively or at the plate.  It has been a tough 21 outs for their opponents all season, finishing at the top of the region in hits, doubles, and walks. Their 97 doubles were 18 more than the next closest team. The Cardinal bats will look to carry the momentum from their performance in round one over as they recorded 25 runs on 33 hits. In the circle they will have Emily Fagan and Jules LeProhon at disposal, both have picked up big wins and outs in key spots as well as help themselves out at the plate to lead the Cardinals to this point. Cardinal pitching this season ranked second in strikeouts in the region on the backs of their two starters. They both saw the circle in round one where Fagan would pick up win in games 1 & 3, while LeProhon would throw a quality 3.1 innings to start game 2 keeping the Cardinals close in the contest.

The Cardinals will travel to host site WVU Potomac State, to take on the host Catamounts in the first matchup of the Region 20 Final Four, Friday May 8th at 2PM. The tournament continues into the weekend May 9th with elimination games, and the Championship Series Sunday May 10 at 12PM.
