Cardinals Fall to Defending Champs in Semifinal
CCBC Catonsville's softball team fell in their semifinal match with defending Region 20 champions Potomac State, losing 5-4 on a walkoff homerun.
In a duel of pitchers, the Cardinals kept the dominant team of Region 20 in check for much of the contest. Sophomore pitcher Kayleigh Rishel (Leonardtown) pitcher a complete game with four strikouts and 69 thrown strikes. Catonsville's offense was held in check until the top of the fourth, when sophomore second baseman Katie Weaver (Eastern Tech) hit a two-run homerun.
Tied 2-2, the Cardinals would lose the lead after Potomac State added two runs on an error. Entering the sixth, the Cardinals would tie the game once more an a second two-run homerun by freshman catcher Hailey Seaton (Liberty). Entering the seventh, the Cardinals needed just three outs to force extra innings, but the first Catamount batter hit a walkoff homerun to send Potomac State to the title game.
Catonsville will play one more contest to try and set up a rematch with the Catamounts in the championship.
