The Lady Cardinals squeeze by in a thriller for their final home game of the season
Catonsville, MD- It was a meaningful night of softball for the Lady Cardinals last night as they played their hearts out hosting Anne Arundel Community College in their last two home games of the season. Congratulations to sophomores Safiya Sheikh, Abigail Heagy, Brianna Eiser, Madison Miller, and Britney Burke on their successful careers as Lady Cardinals. These Lady Cardinals will surely be missed on the diamond and we wish them the best in their future endeavors.
Game 1: Catonsville 4 (7-18), Anne Arundel 3 (8-8). WP- Bryanna Hoskinson (4-8), LP- Jaclyn Nevins (5-3).
The first game got off to a slow start. Anne Arundel brought in the first run of the game on a single to left center field in the top of the second. The Lady Cardinals had five hits through three innings but were unable to bring in any runs until the fourth inning.
Madison Miller led off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left field, followed by Makenzie Brooks reaching on a fielder's choice. Felicity Voss and Bryanna Hoskinson then hit a single a piece to load the bases. The Lady Cardinals put their first run on the board when Brianna Eiser's ground out brought Makenzie Brooks home.
The Lady Cardinals were able to break the game open in the bottom of the fifth after Britney Burke led off with a triple. Erin McGuire brought her home on a double to center field, followed by a homerun by Abigail Heagy to make the score 4-1 Catonsville.
Anne Arundel was able to bring in two runs in the top of the seventh to make the score 4-3 Catonsville, but it was too little too late.
Game 2: Catonsville 14 (8-18), Anne Arundel 13 (8-9). WP- Felicity Voss (3-1), LP- Kelsey Smith (3-2).
The Lady Cardinals were on fire to start off the second game. After singles from Abigail Heagy and Madison Miller, Makenzie Brooks hit a homerun for three RBIs in the bottom of the first.
Six more runs were batted in for the Lady Cardinals through the second, third, and fourth innings on hits from Erin McGuire, Ayanna Hargrove, Makenzie Brooks, and Bryanna Hoskinson.
In the fifth inning, 13 runs were scored between the two teams. Although the Lady Cardinals were very successful on offense this game, they struggled on defense with five total errors—two taking place in the fifth inning to help Anne Arundel put eight runs on the board and take a 12-9 lead in top of the fifth.
The Lady Cardinals wasted no time and fired right back in the bottom of the fifth. Makenzie Brooks nabbed yet another RBI with a single to left field to bring in Abigail Heagy. Felicity Voss then hit a bomb to right field, bringing in Makenzie Brooks and Madison Miller. Bryanna Hoskinson and Safiya Sheikh ended off this action-packed inning with a single a piece for two more RBIs, allowing the Lady Cardinals to take the lead 14-12.
Anne Arundel was able to put one last run on the board in the sixth inning, but they came up short yet again.
