Cardinals Fall to Cecil in 5-1 Battle Despite Even Shot Count

Catonsville, MD – The CCBC Catonsville Cardinals struggled to keep up the pace in a tough 5-1 defeat against Cecil College on September 2, 2025. The match kicked off with high energy from both sides, but it was Cecil who struck first. In the 12th minute, Leonardo Marquez-Oli opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, giving the Seahawks an early 1-0 lead. The Cardinals responded in the 38th minute when Shirish Sijapati found the back of the net off an assist from Mohammed Massaley, leveling the match at 1-1.

Just before the halftime whistle, Cecil regained the lead. Manuel Machin Hernan scored his first of the day in the 44th minute, assisted by Georges Aravidis Roj, sending the Seahawks into the break up 2-1.

Cecil carried that momentum into the second half. Koki Iwasaki extended the lead in the 63rd minute off a feed from Joshua Duzan, followed by a quick strike from Luis Petavy in the 67th minute, assisted by Landon Cook. The final blow came in the 88th minute when Hernan netted his second goal of the match, this time assisted by Marquez-Oli, sealing a dominant 5-1 victory for the visitors.

Statistically, the match was closer than the scoreline suggests. Both teams recorded 14 shots in the first half, with Cecil edging CCBC in second-half shot attempts, 9-8. However, Cecil capitalized on their chances more effectively, proving the difference in the match.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals showed moments of promise and will look to regroup ahead of their next contest.
