On Thursday, September 22, the Cardinals hosted the Catamounts of West Virginia Potomac State College. The teams were evenly matched throughout the game, but a late 82nd minute goal by the Catamounts sealed a win for the visitors. The Cardinals are now 0-9-1 and will be fighting hard to get their first win of the season soon.
An incredibly quiet and uneventful first half saw the Catamounts fire off 6 shots, with Cardinal's freshman goalkeeper Austin Thomas (Rosedale, MD) recording three saves during the period and freshman defender Paul Catalfamo (Rosedale, MD) putting his body on the line and saving a shot himself in the 20th minute.
The second period would continue just as the first ended. WVU Potomac State had several chances in the first 15 minutes of the period which Catonsville did very well to defend. The Catamounts defense also came to play, keeping the Cardinals shotless the entire game until the 64th minute when freshman forward Alec Britton (Dundalk, MD) finally got a shot off that went high over the net. This would be Catonsville's only shot of the entire match.
Catonsville's strong defense being very impressive as they kept their shape very well throughout the game would unfortunately be breeched as the Catamounts found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. The shot and goal came from freshman forward/defenseman Grant Dadisman (Philippi, WV).
What lacked in offensive threats from both sides for most of the game, the physical play and fight to defend the net was very apparent. The Cardinals and Catamounts combined for 17 total fouls during the game, including three yellow cards and a red card for the Catamount's sophomore midfielder Jacob Ritchie (Frostburg, MD) in the 88th minute of the second period.
The game would end 1-0 to the visitors after a hard fight by the Cardinals. While the team's defense and spectacular goalkeeping performances have helped in recent games, Coach Kingsley Onwuka will be looking for more offensive fight from the attacking players as the team enters the back half of the fall season.
Catonsville will have their second home game in three days on Saturday, September 24th as they take on the Falcons of Lackawanna College.
