Cardinals Drop Home Opener to Owls

Cardinals Drop Home Opener to Owls

In their home opener, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals dropped a hard-fought contest to the Harford Community College Fighting Owls, 6-0, on Thursday night.

Despite a stellar defensive performance in the first half, the Cardinals gave up five goals in the second to drop their third game of the year.

Catonsville's defense, which had given up 19 goals in their first two games, showed signs of improvement in the first half. Despite Harford having multiple chances, the Cardinals kept them out of the net until late in the first half. Sophomore forward Kye Williams scored on a penalty kick to give the Owls a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

The first half's physical play left its mark as both teams came out of the half struggling to score. Catonsville managed several good chances to begin the second half, but all three shots went wide. Freshman goalkeeper Austin Thomas played an excellent game overall, blocking 11 out of 26 shots by the Owls.

Eventually, the Cardinals allowed a second goal by the Owls from sophomore forward Alexis Garcia. This opened the floodgates as the Owls added four more goals in the closing minutes to score a 6-0 win.

Next up for the Cardinals is a road match against Carroll Community College on Tuesday, September 6 at 4:30 PM.
