Catonsville, Md. -- CCBC Catonsville men's soccer suffered a tough loss Thursday night, falling to Montgomery College 3-1 at Joseph P. Murray Stadium.
Despite a valiant defensive effort, the Cardinals (5-4-2) were done in by foul trouble and a strong Raptor defense, resulting in the fourth loss of the season for Catonsville.
Both teams opened the game with aggressive attacking strategies, trading shots in the first five minutes.
Montgomery would strike first in the seventh minute, as freshman midfielder Andres Javitt slipped past his defender and scored from deep.
The rest of the first half was a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities.
The Cardinals would finally break through in the 34th minute, as freshman striker Williams Yami wrestled the ball away from his defenders and scored on a picture-perfect shot from the corner.
The Raptors (8-1) would respond immediately, as Javitt scored his second goal of the game just seconds later off a pass from sophomore midfielder Diego Ramirez.
Montgomery had two more chances to score before halftime, but freshman goalkeeper Keyshawn Bland made incredible saves to keep the score 2-1 entering the break.
The second half opened with a flurry of shots by the Cardinals, but none found their mark.
Yami, Heredia, and freshman forward Christian Angel all had opportunities between the 46th and 51st minutes, but a strong Raptor defense kept the score at 2-1.
In the 74th minute, the Raptors found themselves with their best chance to score yet, but Javitt's shot was blocked by a leaping save by Bland. However, two minutes later, freshman forward Abdoul Anounkou hammered in a deflected shot to give the Raptors a 3-1 lead.
The Cardinals had two last chances to score, but Angel and freshman midfielder Marco Henandez both sent their shots wide right.
The next home game for the Cardinals will be on Tuesday, October 5th, against Carroll Community College. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
