The Cardinals season seemed to start on the wrong foot with terrible early season weather and cancellations delaying valuable on field reps via practice and games. You could see in their play those reps would be missed, as a young roster of just 7 Sophomores would struggle throughout the year in playing complementary baseball, which was a major downfall on the season, it just seemed like when the bats would show, their defense and pitching would go by the wayside and vice versa. However individually the Cardinals had many bright spots and performances on the season. Offensively the Cardinals would be led all year by Freshmen outfielders Skylar Jersey and Wyatt Bickers. These two would prove to be some of the best hitters not only in the Cardinals lineup but in the entire Region 20. Both Jersey(8th) and Bickers (20th) would finish top 20 in the region in batting average, proving to be tough outs all season at the top of the order. The Cardinals pitching staff would feature just 2 Sophomores with AJ Bender and Dominick Debellis seeing 11 and 8 appearances respectively. Injuries and inconsistency would put some these young arms into tight spots where they'd often struggle. There was some promise however with 5 complete games all coming from first year players. It is common for young teams to struggle with key aspects of the game such as allowing walks and making errors as those were the two big factors to keep them out of games this year. With a roster featuring over 80 percent freshmen, the Cardinals will look to the offseason where they anticipate to improve immensely. Despite a 9-23 showing in conference, coach Dan Blue thinks highly of the character makeup of his roster and knows the results will come with time and experience as he's been at the helm for over 20 seasons here at CCBC Catonsville.
