Ramirez Breaks School Record and Cardinals Sweep
Game 1
On Saturday, April 23, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals hosted the Montgomery College Raptors for a double header conference series. Angelo Ramirez (Atlanta, GA), was finally able to beat the school record that everyone was waiting for him to achieve.
Throughout the first two innings of the game there was no scoring from either team and in the third inning the Cardinals were able to add one run on the board after Ramirez singled to center field and stole second base. Next up was Alex Elliot (Clarksville, MD), and he was able to single to left field which drove in Ramirez from second base, making the score 1-0.
In the top half of the fourth inning, the Cardinals were able to retire all three Raptors players for a one, two, three inning. In the bottom of the fourth, the Cardinals added another run to their score when Ramirez singled to right field while advancing Roman March (Baltimore, MD) to third base and scoring Christian Figueroa (North Arlington, NJ). The very next pitch, history was made at CCBC when Angelo Ramirez stole second base, and the whole Cardinals bench stood up and applauded for their teammate who just beat the school record for stolen bases in season. This would make the game 2-0 Cardinals.
In the top of the fifth the Raptors were finally able to put some points on the board scoring four runs. This would give them the lead at this point sitting ahead of the Cardinals 4-2.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Raptors added one more run to their lead making it 5-2 Raptors. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cardinals added a whole bunch of runs to their score while batting around the whole order: Orlando Perez Jr (Ocoee, FL), singled to second base advancing Figueroa to second and scoring Noah Deluca (Odenton, MD), from third; next up, March singled to right field advancing Perez Jr to third, and scoring Figueroa; Immediately after, Ramirez singled to right field scoring March and Perez on the play. Two batters later, Peter Howell (Maitland, FL), singled to the pitcher advancing Elliot to third, and scoring Ramirez. Lastly, Lexius Calderon (Kissimmee, FL), grounded out to second base but was able to score Elliot from third. This would make the score 8-5, and the Raptors were unable to score in the top of the seventh making this the final score.
Game 2
In the start of the second game, the Raptors were able to add one run to the score board making it 1-0 in the top of the first. The bottom of the first, the Cardinals were able to answer back with an Elliot double to left center scoring March from second base. Then Howell grounded out to the pitcher scoring Elliot from third, making the score 2-1 Cardinals.
In the second inning, the Raptors added one more run to their score making it an even 2-2. In the bottom of the second inning, the Cardinals added another run to their score from a single by Perez Jr to right field scoring Tomas Martinez (West New York, NJ) making the score 3-2. This would be the last time that the Raptors score a run for the rest of the game.
In the bottom of the third inning, Catonsville added three more runs to their lead from a homerun by Tony D'Angeli (Columbia, MD, who smacked a bomb out to left center field. Two batters later, Martinez smacked another bomb out to right field over the fence for a two-run home run, making the score 6-2 Cardinals.
In the fifth inning, Deluca singled to left field advancing D'Angeli to third and scoring Howell. The next batter, Martinez, grounded into a double play but was able to score D'Angeli from third base. The score after the fifth inning read 8-2.
In the sixth inning, which happened to be the last inning of the game, Catonsville added a few more runs when Elliot singled to left field advancing Ramirez to third and scoring Perez Jr. D'Angeli walked with the bases loaded which allowed for another run from the Cardinals scoring Ramirez. The next batter up was Deluca and he was walked as well while the bases were still loaded scoring Elliot from third. The next play, Martinez singled to right field which scored Pete Howell from third ending the game. Per the ten-run rule, with the final score being 12-2, Cardinals take the sweep.
