Game 1
On Thursday afternoon, the CCBC Catonsville Cardinals hosted Garrett County College Lakers for a double header matchup. The Cardinals came into this series with a 15-19 record on the season, with an 8-5 conference record.
In the first inning, the Lakers put up one run in the top half of the inning, and the Cardinals were unable to add any runs to the scoreboard. The second inning was similar to the first, with the Lakers adding 3 more runs to their lead making it 4-0. In the third inning, they added another run to make it 5-0.
In the bottom of the third inning Brian Titus (Pasadena, MD), came in to replace Lexius Calderon (Kissimmee, FL), at the catchers' position. A few plays later Titus got his chance to shine, by throwing out one of the Lakers runners at second base who tried to steal. Titus threw an amazing rocket of a throw to second base and Christian Figueroa (North Arlington, NJ), was able to catch the ball and slap the tag on the runner for the third out of the inning.
In the fourth inning, the Lakers added another run to their score to make it 6-0. In the fifth inning Travis Fullerton (Westminster, MD) came in to replace Travis Weaver (Richland, PA), and Fullerton was able to go on to shut out the Lakers for the next two innings holding them to no runs each inning, along with retiring all six batters in a row from the fifth and sixth innings.
In the bottom of the sixth the Cardinals were able to register their first hit on the scoreboard. This shot came from Figueroa who reached third base on a triple that was hit over the right fielder's head.
In the seventh inning, the Cardinals were able to get two outs on the board before switching pitchers. The Lakers hit a double which drove in two runs. Joel Corona (Baltimore, MD), came into pitch for Fullerton and gave up three more runs before he was able to record the last out of the inning. The Cardinals came up in the bottom of the seventh inning hoping for a miracle, but they came up short and the game was over shortly after that. The final score of this game would read 11-0 Lakers.
Game 2
The second game of the double header was a back and forth battle. At the start of this double header Angelo Ramirez (Atlanta, GA), needed five stolen bases to break the school record, which was held by Greg Phelps who played in 2006 and recorded 43 stolen bases that season. During the first game, Ramirez stole two bases which left him with three remaining to break the record. In the second game, he stole another base which has him sitting one behind tying the record and two away from breaking the record with plenty of games to remain. In the bottom of the first inning Ramirez started out strong and made a statement with a monster of a homerun to make the score 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
In the third inning, the Lakers were able to score their first run of the game tying the score 1-1. In the bottom of the third, the Cardinals added another run to their score from a single to right field by Pete Howell (Maitland, FL), which scored Ramirez from second base.
In the fourth inning, the Lakers added two more runs to their score which made the score 3-2 Lakers. In the bottom half of the fourth the Cardinals added another run to tie the game at 3-3. This came when Orlando Perez Jr (Ocoee, FL), doubled to left center field and scored Mark Brady (Catonsville, MD), from third.
No more runs were scored the rest of the game until it came down to extra innings, and in the top of the eighth inning the Lakers added on two final runs to close out the game, with a final score of 5-3.
The Cardinals host another double header this Saturday against Montgomery College at 12:00 & 2:00.
