Cardinals Sweep the Double Header
Game 1
On April 16, 2022, the Catonsville Cardinals took on Anne Arundel Community College for a double header. Coming into these games the Cardinals were 13-19 overall with a 6-5 conference record.
In the first game the Cardinals outhit the Riverhawks 16-15. The leading hitter for the Cardinals was Roman March (Baltimore, MD) with four hits, a homerun, triple, and two singles. Tony D'Angeli (Columbia, MD) led the team in rbi's with four this game.
In the first inning, the Riverhawks went up 3-0, and the Cardinals were able to add one run in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. In the second inning, the Riverhawks added another three runs to make it 6-1. Then the Cardinals started getting hot.
In the bottom of the second the Cardinals scored their first run of the inning with a single by Orlando Perez Jr (Ocoee, FL) which drove in Christian Figueroa (North Arlington, NJ) from second base after he reached on a walk, and then stole second. March was up to bat when he hit a triple and scored Perez from second after a wild pitch was thrown allowing Perez to reach second. Soon after Alex Elliot (Clarksville, MD) hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in March from third base. D'Angeli was up to bad and he walked, while Angelo Ramirez (Atlanta, GA) scored on a wild pitch. This would make the score 6-5 Riverhawks.
In the third inning, the Cardinals went from hot to on fire when they poured on a total of seven runs in the bottom of the third. The inning started with Figueroa singling advancing Noah Deluca (Odenton, MD) to second base and scoring Tomas Martinez (West New York, NJ) from second base. Perez Jr was due up when he reached first base on an error which allowed Figueroa and Deluca to score as well. March was up next and he singled driving in Figueroa, and advancing Perez Jr to third base. Later in the inning Ramirez advanced to third on a wild pitch which allowed March to score from third as well. D'Angeli was up next and he hit blasted a two-run homer. Immediately after that Lexius Calderon (Kissimmee, FL) came up to the plate and hit another homerun. This would make the game 12-6 Cardinals in the lead.
In the top of the fourth the Cardinals gave up three runs, but were able to add another two to their score with back to back home runs from March and Ramirez. The scoreboard read 14-9 after the fourth inning had ended. In the fifth the Cardinals let up two runs making it a little closer with a score of 14-11, and in the bottom of the fifth the Cardinals added one more run on a wild pitch which scored Calderon making it 15-11.
In the sixth the Cardinals held the Riverhawks to no runs in the top of the inning while they continued to add on runs to pad their lead. Elliot singled which advanced Ramirez to second, March to third, and scored Perez Jr. D'Angeli was due up next and he singled advancing Elliot to third and scoring March and Ramirez. Later in the inning Deluca doubled scoring Caleb Bailey (Severn, MD) as well as Elliot. The Riverhawks would come up empty in the seventh, and the Cardinals would secure their win with a final of 20-11.
Game 2
In the second game of the double header the Cardinals would allow one run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first the Cardinals would add on a few runs to take the lead. Ramirez started it off with a sacrifice fly to centerfield which scored March from third. Later in the inning Pete Howell (Maitland, FL) doubled and drove in Elliot from third. Next batter up was Martinez and he singled, driving in Howell from second. This would make the score 3-1 in the bottom of the first with the Cardinals in the lead.
The Riverhawks were able to add on a run in the second making it 3-2. In the third inning, the Cardinals would add on two runs when Elliot hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which would score Ramirez. A few batters later Martinez would single to right field driving in Brian Titus (Pasadena, MD) from third base.
In the fourth inning, the Riverhawks added two more runs. In the bottom of the fourth the Cardinals added one more run from a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Figueroa.
In the sixth inning, the Cardinals added on two more runs from a single by Ramirez which advanced March to second, while scoring Perez Jr from third base. Elliot was up next and he singled as well advancing Ramirez to third, and drove in March. The score read 8-4 heading into the top of the seventh. The Riverhawks were not able to capitalize and only added two runs to their score which would end the game, with a final score of 8-6 Cardinals win the double header. The Cardinals have improved their record to 15-19 while going 8-5 in conference play.
