Catonsville Splits the Double Header
Game 1
On Sunday, April 3 CCBC Catonsville Cardinals hosted Camden County College for a two-game double header. Throughout the first game was a back and forth fight. The Cardinals were able to pull out ahead in the end, but it did not come easy.
In the second inning Camden put three runs on the board and added another run in the third inning making the game 4-0 through three innings. In the fourth inning, the Cardinals came alive cutting the lead in half.
Angelo Ramirez (Atlanta, GA) started off the fourth inning with a walk. After reaching first on that walk. He immediately stole second. Without hesitating he stole third base. Next up to bat, Alex Elliot (Clarksville, MD) also reached first on a walk. Camden's starting pitcher threw over to first 4 straight times in hope of picking off Elliot, but every time he threw over it was unsuccessful. One pitch later a wild pitch was thrown with advanced Elliot to second base. Tony D'angeli (Columbia, MD) was due up after that driving in Ramirez with a single to shortstop advancing Elliot to third base. Soon after Christian Figueroa (North Arlington, NJ) reached first on a fielder's choice driving in Elliot home from third. This would make the game 4-2 in the fourth inning.
Just when the Cardinals come alive, Camden had something to say about that adding 4 runs in the fifth inning, making the score 8-2. These would be the last runs that Camden put on the board for the first game of the double header. In the bottom of the sixth inning Figueroa hit a shot to left center reaching second on a double. Tomas Martinez (West New York, NJ) singled to second base advancing Figueroa to third. After that Noah Deluca (Odenton, MD) hit a sacrifice fly to left field driving in Figueroa from third. At this point the bases became loaded, and Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to right field driving in Martinez from third. This would make the game a little closer with the score reading 8-4.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Cardinals were not playing around. They meant business and it started with the bases loaded. Martinez hit into a double play with Figueroa out at second Advancing Caleb Bailey (Severn, MD) to third and scoring James Hurst (Orlando, FL) leaving the Cardinals with one out left and the score being 8-5 the Cardinals needed a 2-out rally to pull away with this game. On the next pitch Bailey scored on a wild pitch making it 8-6 with a victory in sight. Soon after the Cardinals had a man on first and second, with Roman March (Baltimore, MD) reaching first on an error by the center fielder, scoring Orlando Perez Jr. (Ocoee, FL) and Deluca from first, making it 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh with one out remaining. Ramirez was up to bat, and he reached first on a walk advancing March to second base. The next batter up, Elliot hit a shot left field driving in March from second winning the game on an rbi single winning the game in a walk off fashion. The final score would read 9-8 Cardinals win.
Game 2
The second game of the double header was just as close as the first game of the double header. The Cardinals started off strong adding a run in the bottom of the first inning with Elliot doubling to right center field driving in Ramirez from second, after Ramirez reached first by getting hit by a pitch, and yet again stole another base advancing to second.
The Cardinals would not score another run until the fourth inning. By this time the score was 2-1 Camden was winning. In the fourth the Cardinals added two runs from a March double riving in Perez Jr, and Martinez. This would make it 3-2 Cardinals.
In the top of the fifth inning the Cardinals let up four runs making it 6-3. In the bottom of the fifth inning the Cardinals were able to add some more runs when Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving in D'Angeli from third base. Next batter up, Deluca doubled to left center scoring Lexies Calderon (Kissimmee, FL) from third. This would make the game closer with a score of 6-5.
In the top of the sixth Camden added two more runs, as well as the Cardinals with a single to left field by D'Angeli scoring March from third. Soon after Calderon would single to left field as well driving in Elliot from third base. This would make the game 8-7.
In the top of the seventh the Cardinals gave up a three-run home run making the score 11-7. In the bottom of the seventh the Cardinals were hoping for another rally to hopefully come out on top. March started off with a double to right center driving in Perez Jr. all the way from first base. Soon after Pete Howell (Maitland, FL) would single to right field advancing Elliot to third and scoring March from third base. Later in the inning the Figueroa was up to bat and he would get on base from a single to left center field advancing Joel Corona (Baltimore, MD) to second base after he pinch ran for Howell, while advancing Elliot to third. With one out left they would hope to add one final run to at least tie the game to send it in to extra innings, but unfortunately the Cardinals hit into a fielder's choice to end the game with a final score of 11-10.
