Region XX Champs, but Baseball Eyeing a Bigger Prize

 

Catonsville, MD – Congratulations are in order for Coach Dan Blue, and his CCBC Catonsville Cardinal baseball team for capturing the Division II, Region XX Championship.  The Cardinals played their best baseball during the weekend tournament, beating Anne Arundel Community College 5-4, then winning a best of three series against host, Frederick Community College.

Brady Adam set the tone for the pitching staff, tossing a complete game against Anne Arundel Community College as the number two seeded Cardinals bested the River Hawks 5-4 in the opening round game, advancing in the winners bracket against Frederick.  Eric Niederhauser had two doubles and two RBI for Catonsville.

Carl Colbert Jr. and Eddie Nottingham had RBI singles as the Cardinals opened the top of the first with two runs, and Carson Pinkney tossed a complete game gem and Catonsville took the winners bracket game by a score of 3-1.  Manny Jimenez added the final run with a home run in the ninth inning.

Jordan Sanders had three hits including a three run home run, and Brady Adam had four hits but Frederick Community College outlasted the Cardinals 10-8, to tie the best of three series at one game each.

Dalton Swanger pitched six strong innings, while Carl Colbert Jr, Jordan Sanders and Avery Rosania all hit home runs to lead the Cardinals to the Region XX championship with a 7-6 victory over Frederick Community College in the championship game.  With Colbert’s sixth inning blast he set a new school record with his seventeenth home run of the season.  Brady Adam came in and got out of a bases loaded, ninth inning jam to preserve the win for the Cardinals. 

Brady Adam, Jordan Sanders, Carson Pinkney, Avery Rosania and Eric Niederhauser all earned All-Tournament Team selections.

The Region XX crown allows the CCBC Catonsville Baseball team to meet Region XIX champion Mercer County Community College in the Northeast District Championship in a best of three series with the winner going on to the NJCAA World Series.  Cardinal skipper Dan Blue made sure to emphasize that winning the Region was a great accomplishment, but the opportunity to play-on is within his team's reach.  Games begin Friday, May 19 at CCBC Catonsville Community College with a start time of 12pm. Game 2 will take place Fridayu at 3pm and the if necessary game is slotted for Saturday, May 20 at 12pm.
